BIOGRAPHY

The Academician Karaman was born in Skopje, in Macedonia in 1938, in a family of biologists (14 biologists, from grandfather Luka to Gordan’s children). Stanko Karaman (the father), a famous biologist (the founder and the manager of the Museum of Natural Science and the Zoo in Skopje) and Zora Vales-Karaman (the mother) University Professor, had three children: Mladen, Gordan, and Biljana. On the eve of the Second World War, in 1940, Stanko sent the sons Mladen and Gordan to Split, to his mother Anka and sister Darinka. Gordan and Mladen stayed in Split until the end of the war. The grandmother and the aunt were surrogate parents to Gordan in the war havoc. They were his first educators, his consolation, and shelter from fear. After the war, the father and mother managed to come to Split and the family was finally reunited. On Sundays, they often went for picnics on foot in the environs of Split to its still desolate beaches at the time. They also went by bus to numerous brooks and rivers, from Omis to Trogir. On those picnics, the parents diligently collected the biological materials to study them, and the children actively participated in it and acquired the basic knowledge of biology.
After the end of the war, Gordan finished elementary school in Split. When father Stanko was appointed as the director of the newly founded Institute of Biology in Dubrovnik, and the mother as the curator of the Museum in Dubrovnik, the whole family moved to Dubrovnik in 1950, and there Gordan finished high-school. At the invitation of the Museum of Natural Science of Skopje, the family decided to return to Skopje, the father to accept the position of the curator in the Museum, and the mother the position of the professor at the Faculty of Forestry. In Skopje, the Karaman family lived in the actual building of the Museum for several years and hence Gordan grew up there in a museum atmosphere. Everybody around him was engaged in collection and scientific dealing with materials. That was the time when Gordan also started being interested in ants (Formicidae) and other insects.
The Academician Karaman, after graduating from the lyceum, in 1957, enrolled in the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, the Department of Biology in Skopje and graduated in 1961, for less than 4 years, being the best in his class. That was the period of maturation of the Academician Karaman and his reconsideration of his scientific interests and pursuits.
Faced with the painful fact that his father’s health was deteriorating and, with the proposal of his father to continue his initiated research in crabs of the group Amphipods, Gordan abandoned his research in ants (which he continued to collect until the present days) and Apterygots. He devoted himself to the research in Amphipods, which became his prime life ommitment, until the present days.
As a graduate biologist hungry for work, the Academician Karaman came to Montenegro in 1963. He came to Boka, to Kotor. The Academician Karaman came to Montenegro, stayed in it until today, without leaving it even in those most difficult times of it, when the offers to go abroad were very attractive and numerous. In Kotor, in the Institute of Marine Biology, as the assistant, he studied fauna of the seabed of the Boka Kotorska Bay and of the Montenegrin coast of the Adriatic, with particular stress on a group of crabs - Amphipods. At the same time, he also studied fresh-water amphipods of the former Yugoslavia. In 1964, at the University in Belgrade, he defended his doctor’s thesis in the area of taxonomy and ecology of fresh-water Amphipods of Yugoslavia, as one of the youngest doctors of science in Yugoslavia at the time.
In 1967, Karaman moved to Podgorica where, as a senior research associate, he worked in the Biological Institute in Vranjina. In Podgorica, he started a family. He has two children, Vesna (biologist, doctor of science) and Marko (biologist, master of biology). Starting a family did not slow down his advancement in the world of science owing to the support and assistance he had in the family itself.
In order not to be left in the margins of science, he spent a lot of time on different specializations and professional improvement: Station Marine d`Endoume et Centre d`Oceanographique, Marseille, France; Museo civico di Storia Naturale, Verona, Italy; Zoologisches Museum der Universitảt Humboldt in Berlin, Germany; Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the USA, as the Fulbright scholarship fellow; Limnological Institute of Baikal, Irkutsk, Russia, etc.

Going frequently to specializations and stays abroad across the world, the Academician Karaman met all the renowned international specialists in the area of studies that he studied. To many of them he dedicated (he named after them) numerous newly discovered species. On the other hand, many research workers also dedicated numerous species to the Academician Karaman by giving them his name (Rhipidogammarus karamani, Harpinia karamani, Megacyclops gordani, Aturusgordani, genus Gordania, etc.).
The Academician Karaman participated in numerous local and international scientific projects as a researcher or their manager, always reaffirming his knowledge and experience. Universal culture and excellent knowledge of his profession did not remain unnoticed abroad either, numerous scientific journals elected him as a member of their respective editing boards until the present days (Zootaxa; Acta Adriatica; Thallasia Jugoslavica, etc.).
When, in 1980, he was elected as the Director of the Institute of Biological and Medical Research of Montenegro, he advocated the development of those areas of science in Montenegro. But Gordan Karaman understood that scientific work by itself is not sufficient, that it must be pursued in cooperation with the relevant cultural and educational activities and the activities of the community in which he lived and, therefore, he also dedicated some of his activities to the pedagogical work. Thus, in the course of the eighties of the last century, in parallel with the scientific work, he delivered lectures as a professor at the Teacher-training College in Niksic. In the beginning of the nineties of the past century, the Department of Biology was founded at the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences in Podgorica, and the Academician Karaman was in the Organizing Committee for its foundation, participated in formation of the same, and was elected as the Full Professor at it, until his retirement in 2004.
He also participated in establishing of post-graduate studies at the Department of Biology and was their first manager and a full-time lecturer until the present day.
His teaching and scientific activity was not limited to Montenegro only; he was a mentor of students up to the degrees of masters and doctors of science at the Universities in Belgrade and Novi Sad. The award for his teaching work arrived in 2005, by conferring to the Academician Karaman the title of Professor Emeritus of the University in Podgorica. He actively participated in the organization and work of the Speleological Association and societies in Montenegro for a number of years. He instructed young speleologists in biodiversity of the living world in caves and their value and importance both for the science and for Montenegro, and the need for their protection.
One of the dearest recognitions of the society for his scientific contribution and work was when, in 1988, he was elected as a member of the Montenegrin Academy of Science and Arts, and later also as the secretary of the Department of Natural Sciences of the same. Advocating, through the Montenegrin Academy of Science and Arts, the formation of the Natural History Museum of Montenegro, as an institution the activity of which should unite the scientific, educational, and cultural spheres of human perceptions and activities, he readily joined in the foundation of that institution, finally founded in 1995.
The Academician Karaman, in his fifty years of working engaged in science, has published around 260 scientific papers, described around 81 genera and over 200 new species and subspecies new to the science.

SCIENTIFIC WORK

    TOP

The Academician Karaman is a member of a renowned family of biologists, which has, through four generations, yielded 14 biologists out of whom, up to now, 10 doctors of biological sciences and 2 masters of biology, predominantly in the areas of zoology, botany, and genetics.
In such a family environment, where dedication to biology was a pivot around which everything else rotated and was subordinated to it, although it was not marked as the mandatory family tradition, the Academician Karaman grew up and lived, as a biologist, zoologist, whose field of interest and of scientific work and research were the crabs of the genus AMPHIPODS, their ecology, taxonomy, and zoogeography, thereby the fauna of the seabed (zoobenthos) as well as the ecology and fauna of
zoobenthos of fresh and brackish waters, and the fauna of ants (Formicidae).
He started his initial more serious scientific research in the secondary school collecting and studying ants (Formicidae) and Apterygots, but he did not publish the results of that research at the time, because further research led him in another direction. He switched back to ants in the nineties of the past century, working together with his son Marko, who has continued to work on them up to now.
In view of the fact that the health of the father Stanko who, apart from other numerous groups he studied (fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles, bats, crabs, snails, mosquitoes), also studied a group of fresh-water and brackish Amphipods from surface and ground waters, began to deteriorate, he proposed to his son Gordan to
take on that area of his research—of Amphipods, bearing in mind the existence of his rich library and voluminous typological and other materials of Amphipods. Gordan thus started working together with his father on the study of Amphipods. In the course of their work together, they published two joint papers in 1959: on ground crabs of the genus Niphargus in Bulgaria, and on surface crabs of the genus Gammarus of the Balkans. The death of the father, in 1959, stopped that cooperation, and Gordan had
to continue with that research alone. He took his doctor’s degree in 1964, at the Belgrade University, with the thesis: TAXONOMY AND ECOLOGY OF THE GROUP OF FRESH-WATER AMPHIPODS OF THE SUBGENUS RIVULOGAMMARUS S. Kar. IN YUGOSLAVIA., before the board composed of highly respected professors of the University: The Academician Sinisa Stankovic, Dr. Milika Pljakic, and Dr. Simo Grozdanic.
As careers often determine both our destiny and our work, thus the Academician Karaman came, in 1963, to the newly founded the Institute of Marine Biology in Kotor to the position of assistant for benthos (fauna of the seabed) where he immediately started to research fauna of the seabed of the Boka Kotorska Bay and thereby of marine Amphipods as well, which he would continue to do up to the present days.
However, in parallel with that, the Academician Karaman also continued to research Amphipods of continental surface and ground waters, which he studies today as well.
Understanding that modern research of any group of organisms or areas cannot be done in isolation from the international science, Karaman, in the course of his scientific and research work, intensively cooperated with all then but also nowadays renown scientists in that area. He used to go to them for professional improvement, conducted numerous research studies together with them, and published numerous scientific papers with them. On the other hand, many of those great scientists used to come to Podgorica to the Academician Karaman to jointly resolve certain scientific problems related to the study of Amphipods and prepared joint papers: Dr. Jerry Barnard from Smithsonian Institute in Washington, Dr. Sandro Ruffo from Verona (Italy), Dr. Pinkster from Amsterdam, Dr. Pesce from Aquila (Italy), Dr. Tibaldi from Milan, Dr. Gottstein from Zagreb, etc.
Using a very rich collection of ground-water Amphipods in Verona, and owing to the whole-hearted assistance of Dr. Sandro Ruffo, Karaman, in the course of many years of study, described a series of new species of Amphipods from Italy. This resulted in preparation and publishing of the monograph “FAUNA OF FRESH-WATER AMPHIPODS OF ITALY” on 337 pages and 154 plates, published in Italy in 1993, in which, among others, two new genera and 31 species and subspecies are specified new to the science, described by Karamana alone or in cooperation with the Italians. That monograph, with the keys for determination of species, in the Italian and English languages, is the reference book for any further research works on amphipods of Italy and the neighboring regions even nowadays.
Cooperation with various research workers in the field of taxonomy of Amphipods of Europe and the Mediterranean, in the seventies of the past century, resulted in a joint agreement of several research workers, the Academician Karaman being among them, to produce a joint monograph of the fauna of Amphipods of the Mediterranean, in which each of them would deal with one part. That is how, based on many years of research, the big Mediterranean FAUNA OF AMPHIPODS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN was created, which included descriptions and drawings of marine amphipods (451 species of 167 genera and 48 families).
After his visit to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington in 1974, Gordan proposed to the biggest researcher of marine Amphipods in the world at the time, Dr. Jerry Barnard, to jointly write a monograph that would include all up to then known species, genera, and families of marine amphipods across the World. After over sixteen years of joint work, in 1991, in Australia, their monograph was published in two volumes “THE FAMILIES AND GENERA OF MARINE GAMMARIDEAN AMPHIPODS (EXCEPT MARINE GAMMAROIDS) on 868 pages with 133 plates. Even nowadays, after 17 years, this monograph represents the groundwork for modern research of the diversity and zoogeography of marine Amphipods of the world.
The Academician Karaman spent his entire working life in Montenegro and, therefore, he also paid special attention to the research of fauna of fresh-water surface and ground Amphipods of Yugoslavia, and particularly of Montenegro and the neighboring regions, describing two new genera (the genera of Accubogammarus andLaurogammarus) and a series of species from Montenegro, new to the science (the species Accubogammarus algor; Niphargus carcerarius, N. zorae, N. pavicevici, N.occultus, Gammarus pljakici, Hadzia crispata, etc.), pointing out that the fauna of Amphipods of Montenegro, due to its great diversity and complex geological history, is still insufficiently known. In the course of studying of a very rich fauna of brackish waters of the Montenegrin Littoral, the Academician Karaman also described a series of species new to the science (Neogammarus adriaticus from the beaches of Budva,Melita bulla from the seacoast nearby Becici, etc.).
When we evaluate the work of a researcher, his contribution to the Montenegrin, and then to the international science as well, we must always start from the time in which he worked, the working conditions that existed at the time, the environment in which he created, and his level of communication and cooperation with other research workers. Therefore, bare facts about the number of described species (over 200 species), genera (over 81), families (more than 3), the number of published papers (over 260), monographs, etc., will not give us the right picture of the actual scientist, if we do not take all of the above factors into account.
The Academician Karaman was maybe better recognized among his colleagues from the profession, and scientists throughout the world, who dedicated a series of their respective newly-discovered species to the Academician Karaman (Harpiniakaramani, Ampelisca karamani, Megacyclops gordani, genus Gordania, etc.)
We can say with pleasure that the Academician Karaman is a very important figure in the development of science in Montenegro. He was active in the period of still very modest development of science in Montenegro, pleading for a better position of science in the society, and understanding that science is one of the best ambassadors of a state. Karaman, in his research works done in Montenegro covered not only Montenegro and the former Yugoslavia, the Balkans, Europe, but also all other
continents and oceans from America to Africa, Australia to Antarctic, Asia to Arctic, giving his research works an international dimension. The Academician Karaman also
referred his university instructors to the international scientific stage, who later became world-renowned scientists in their respective disciplines.
