BEHAVIOURAL ASPECTS ON LAPWING (VANELLUS VANELLUS): NEST BUILDING AND MATING GAMES

S y n o p s i s:

We performed our studies in Vladeni wetland area (the middle part of the Prut River basin) where we found five breeding waders’ species; among these, the most frequent breeding species is the Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). Humid meadows,  humid grasslands and  flooding areas near the swamps represent  suitable habitat for lapwings. Male uses nest building during the mating games – after he wins the territory, the male tries to attract several females to his territory. He builds  nest on the top of a small hillock surrounded by herbs - he makes circular moving, with 90⁰ right and left, using his breast and, sometimes, using his legs in order to deepen the nest enough.  If the female accepts the nest, the birds begin the mating games; we also observed that part of the mating was displayed during the brooding period. If the female refuses the nest, the male can harass her or begin to build a new nest with another female.

ASPEKTI PONAŠANJA OBIČNOG VIVKA  (VANELLUS VANELLUS): PRAVLJENJE GNIJEZDA I PARENJE

Obavili smo istraćivanja u močvarnom području Vladeni (središnji dio basena rijeke Prut) gdje smo našli pet vrsta močvarnih ptica gnjezdarica; među njima, najčešća gnjezdarica je obični vivak (Vanellus vanellus). Vlažne livade, vlažni travnjaci i poplavne oblasti  pored močvara predstavljaju pogodno stanište za običnog vivka. Mužjak koristi pravljenje gnijezda tokom igre parenja – nakon osvajanja teritorije, mužjak pokušava da na svoju teritoriju privuče nekoliko ženki. Pravi gnijezdo na vrhu malog humka okruženog biljkama – pravi kružne pokrete, 90⁰ desno i lijevo, koristeći prsa a, ponekad, koristeći noge kako bi dovoljno produbio gnijezdo. Ako ženka prihvati gnijezdo, ptice počinju igru parenja; takođe smo primijetili izvođenje igre parenja tokom perioda ležanja na jajima. Ukoliko ženka odbije gnijeydo, mužjak je može uznemiravati ili početi da pravi novo gnijezdo sa drugom ženkom.
